The 29-Inch Desk Flaw
Standard commercial desks are manufactured at a fixed 29 to 30 inches. This height is ergonomically calibrated only for individuals who are 6'2" or taller! Anyone under 6 feet working at a standard 29" desk is forced to hike their shoulders upward or elevate their chair so high their feet dangle, cutting off femoral circulation.

Frequently asked questions
- Why are standard office desks 29 inches high?
- The 29-inch desk standard originated during the 1950s typewriter era when bulky mechanical typewriters sat in drop-down wells. Modern thin keyboards and flat desks at 29 inches cause shoulder elevation for 85% of adult office workers.
- How often should you transition between sitting and standing?
- Ergonomists recommend the 45-15 or 30-30 rule: sit for 45 minutes, stand for 15 minutes, or alternate in 30-minute blocks. Prolonged standing causes lower limb vascular pooling, while prolonged sitting compresses spinal discs.
